The Miners Castle rock formation is one of the iconic features along the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore located just east of Munising, Michigan in the state’s upper peninsula.

I looked for a vantage point different from where the throngs of tourists were located and I didn’t have to walk very far. Along a chain link fence line just yards from a park’s viewing platform, my photo assistant Mr. Salty Dog waited patiently while I located the exact spot between tree branches. I took my time switching lenses to obtain these three different compositions:
— Miners Castle (close-up) as featured at the top of this page;
— Miners Castle (medium) as featured on its own detail page in addition to the bottom of this one; and,
— Miners Castle (close-up), with a treatment like I did with the medium version.

As I used to tell my college-level students, to achieve a portfolio-level image of a landmark location, take the time to think differently than the crowd. Know that I don’t ever use the cliche, “think outside the box” because my life’s mantra is, “What box?!”
