This image of a remote county road located in the Upper Peninsula (i.e. yoop) of my home state of Michigan was taken in October of 2022 during my epic Leaf Peeping Tour trip. It is located due east of Munising. My friends were driving their vehicle and did not want to go any further.
According to a panel of travel experts assembled by USA Today in 2022, the yoop was ranked among the top 20 destinations in the United States then a poll selected it as the No. 1 location for a fall color destination beating out locations such as the Pocono mountains in Pennsylvania; Stowe, Vermont; and, Gatlinburg, Tennessee.
The leaves also started turning colors late that year and I got lucky with our travel dates, which were somewhat flexible but not by much; Our trip was at the end of the traditional fall tourist season so the crowds of people were gone and some businesses were closing for the winter. At one point, we some some “air snow” that melted as soon as it hit the ground.
I find peace in the bursting colors, and the sounds of rustling leaves punctuated by northern song birds.
